I have the fondest memories of Mabel and the other cafeteria cooks....Lucy Hiles, Mrs. Lynch, Ruth Wilson -
Mabel was the nicest lady and she loved all of us and served us our lunches with that beautiful smile of hers!
AND.....To this day I cannot find a delicious 'goulash' recipe! Our elementary school had the best and my next favorite lunch was chili days with peanut butter sandwiches with a touch of white Karo syrup!
AND I loved working in the school's cafeteria loading that gigantic dishwasher and helping the cooks........we had so much fun!
It was so nice seeing Mabel at our South Lebanon Elementary Reunion in 2008.
Anyone going to the visitation or funeral?

Thanks for posting that guys-I hadn't heard. I am so sad. I loved Mabel too, she was my Sunday School teacher at SLBC for a long time. She was just so loving-perky-happy I think to the end. We will be going for sure on Fri night but probably not on Sat. as I have phones. Well- is everyone snowed in?? I have been here in Riversbend with my kids since 6:00 Mon. keeping them while their parents are out of town, well then school is canceled 2 days in a row-but they have been very good, but I am ready to go home, suppose to leave about 10:00 tonight but I'm afraid their flights may not make & I will end up here another night. WHATEVER!! Sometimes these little surprises that get us off track can be nice-my favorite times with the kids growing up was when there was a snow or sick day and everything came to a halt unexpectantly. The whole routine took a turn & it was always nice! Have a great day all!

Brenda, Thanks for taking the time to let us know about Mabel. I have the sweetest memories of her, too. I only knew her from the cafeteria line, but she was always smiling and talking to the children. All of the ladies were exceptionally nice, but Mabel took the time to tell me her name. She was never too busy to say "hi" to us. There were times when we would all be chattering at her at once....what patience. She never appeared to be flustered. She impacted many young lives from a position that may have seemed "unglamorous" to some. She allowed God's love to shine through her to all of us. What a eulogy we could give her.
BTW: I was talking about our delicious school lunches not even a week ago. Everything was prepared and served with pride. It could have been our grandmothers cooking for us. Just one more example of excellence etched into our tender minds. Bonnie
PS Brenda, I was wondering how you're healing from your fall.

I just saw this about Mabel.... she was the best cook any school wver had! And Brenda, I make 'goulash' all the time. It's as close to the school's as I can remember..... Mabel told me how to make their 'turkey gravy', I told my Mom that the school's was the best! now, my mom also makes her's that way!
