It was one of our favorite things to do , as a family (when my parents were still together). We'd sometimes spread a blanket beside the car, and lie out under the stars; it was great. I recall an occasion, when I was a very little girl, (I was small enough that I stood in the front seat, between my mother who was driving, and my aunt). As we were pulling up to the pay window, at the Old Fort, we began to hear voices from the trunk, "are we there yet? Can we get out now"? We made it past the cashier, and found a parking spot, but Mom and Aunt Ruby were afraid to let Dad and Uncle Vernon out of the trunk. We finally left, with them still in the trunk. Mom and Aunt Ruby were PKs (preacher's kids), I guess they were afraid that God would get them right there, during the Melody Cartoons. ;D

Chuck, I remember the Old Fort very well, I went there many times. The spot where it was located is now a car lot. The bowling alley and skating rink are still there. The Academy and Jolly Rogers are long gone too. There is still a drive-in in Wilmington I went last summer and it is still a lot of fun watching a movie outdoors.

After high school, I went out on a blind date (believe it or not!) to the Old Fort. The guy looked just like John Denver only he had this extra tooth that stuck out like a tusk. I was scared to death that he would kiss me, and I'd lose a lip! The movie, of all things, was "Love Story". I stayed as far away from him as I could get the whole evening and managed to avoid that dreaded kiss. He went to get us popcorn, and on the way back, he couldn't find the car. I watched him wonder around, in what seemed like forever, and I just sat there laughing. That's mean, I know! But anyway, every time I pass by the site of that old drive-in, I think of him.

Darlene.. that's too funny.! One of my "few" dates was at the Old Fort.. I think it might have been the same movie (LOVE STORY).. but it wasn't me with the buck tooth! I can't remember for sure who I was with.. I think I know.. but I wouldn't want to say and be wrong.

Darlene, What a Hoot!! That's too funny. I do recall a funny story about the Old Fort also,I had a date with a certain unnamed person(not Owen) & he came to pick me up & sat in the driveway reving his engine for 15 mins & my Dad wouln't let me go out, finally he came to the door. Off we went to the drive in -surprise-but he was too cheap to buy tickets so we parked in the back of the skating rink & watched the movie.Honestly, until I was so annoyed I asked to just go home. That was the first and last date with that guy. Thanks for reminding me of another reason why I love Owen.(Besides, when we parked behind the skating rink I didn't mind at all!)Shh!! Don't tell our kids!

Darlene, that is so funny. That is why i never left the car. I didn't want to get lost. Carol, you always had the best dates. Chuck, You mean all those cars behind the skating rink were not skater cars?

Darlene; That was great! You're so bad...I like it. Carol, you're so bad...who woulda' thought it? Gil and I used to park behind the Franklin High School on Pennroyal Rd, off of 741...Whoops, did I say that out loud? PS I won't tell your kids, but my youngest daughter, Shellie, enjoys monitoring this site.

I remember the Old Fort Drive-In too. I believe I went there on a first date. (but i won't say who that was with). In fact, I think I ended up there quite a few times. Was I that bad?!!!!. You go back and think about things that happened, and you think WOW. ANyway, those High School years were fun. Connie

What I remember about the Old Fort is that Wednesday nights were "Lucky Buck Night". My memory is not as good as Bonnie's, but I think you could get a whole car load of people in for $1.00 and then they would have a drawing for a cash prize and I think the drawing would be after the show. I remember lots of times scrounging up that $1.00 so we could all head out to the old fort. It seems like they eventually raised the price. It was still called "Lucky Buck Night" but I think it cost more than a dollar to get in. Remember those swings that they had that were shaped like horses(i think). It was always fun to get there early so you could go to the play area before the show.
