Shelia (Tolson) Taylor sent in this newspaper account of the tragic death of Harmon Halcomb. I have always wondered what happened.

I saved this article from the newspaper because he was the first "kid" I knew that died, much less such a tragic death. I'm sorry that you're unable to read it.

I can read it when I click to get the full size image... then expand the page.. but if you can't see it well enough.. I'll try and transcribe the text in the next day or two.. and reprint the article here.. Be patient with me.. got a couple of other things going on right now.. but I'll get to it.

WOW, you mean you have a life outside of this web-site? Thelma called me this morning, and we were talking about just how addicted we are to this site. I told her that I think about it all day, and spend most of the evening on it. We decided that if you ever decide to charge, that we'd just have to pay...I've become a "Kings High proboard 101 junkie"

Here is an "easier to read" transcript of the newspaper story:
(LEBANON, OHIO - Special) Fingerprint identification Monday revealed that the body found in Warren County last Wednesday, in a soybean field, is that of Harmon Monrow Halcomb, 15, who lived on Morrow Rd. near South Lebanon.
The office of Sheriff Byron C. Kennard supplied the identification Monday after receiving finger print study results from the Bureau Of Criminal Identification at London.
Denver Redmon, principal of Kings High School, Kings Mills, where Halcomb started his freshman year last month, said Monday that Halcomb's record at South Lebanon school indicated that the youth was an average student, that he was "quiet" and not absent an excessive number of times.
His attendance record for the 1966-67 school year showed 13 1/2 days of absence. He attended four days this year at Kings, Redmon said.
Halcomb had been living with a sister, Pansie Halcomb, who lives near Kings High. Their parents have been dead for several years. Pansie Halcomb said her brother had left home September 13th with the intention of going to get a physical examination so that he might participate in football at Kings High.
"He had become quite enthusuastuc about playing football." she said.
The family filed a missing person report when Harmon failed to return home, she said.
The sister reported that she and her brother had come to live in this area about a year ago from Washington, D.C. At the time of her brother's disappearance, they had lived at the Morrow Rd. address.
She said her brother was an avid hunter and that he loved dogs. She said he "thought nothing" of taking a sweater from the home for his animals to use as a "nest."
In addition to Pansie Halcomb, the youth is survived by four other sisters, Mrs Billie Jo Davis, now in Saudi Arabia. Mrs Robert baker, Kings Mills; Mrs Clyde Gentry, South Lebanon and Dovie Halcomb, 14, who is staying with foster parents in Ohio.
Funeral arrangemnets are in charge of Gallimore-Shorten Funeral Home, Mason.

Ya know... I will just go ahead and say this.. I have often wondered about this event. This newspaper account doesn't say anything about how he was killed.. or about any investigation.
Do any of you recall any follow up?
I seem to have some sort of recollection of hearing that he may have been fired at by a policeman.. as he ran through that field.. does this sound familiar to anyone.
It would be interesting to see other stories the newspapaer might have printed.

From what I remember Chuck he was running from a police officer and he said he was firing a warning shot. But it hit him in the back of the head. They tried to explain it that the field was not level and when the officer was shotting he was coming up out of a valley. So when the officer shot he was stepping upout of the valley. But everyone was asking why was he shotting so low. Thats about all I remember.

That sounds familiar..
It's strange.. I guess times have changed,.. but now.. it is very rare for our officers to fire their weapons. Warning shots are pretty much unheard of.
There are many officers that go through their entire career and never draw thier guns out of the holster.. other than in training.

Harmon lived down the street me me on Maple St. in Kings when he was killed. I was at his funeral ( a grave side service). It was so sad. His coffin was so small it wouldn't have held a medium sized animal. Such a sad and tragic affair. His sister was so torn up, and I far as I know, shr never got any straight answers to her questions about Harmons death. The deputy that fired at him didn't even report firing his weapon that day. Harmon layed in that field and died alone, his body left to decompose. I still feal a sense of bitterness to this day over Harmons death

Steve, Thank you so much for sharing your heart, and your pain with those of us who might not have known Harmon the way you did. It was a tragic loss.
Also, thank you for taking the time to post with us on the reunion web-site; you'll find that this is a safe place to share. Bonnie

Do you know what I was thinking. It seems that Harmon's story has left a lot of us feeling sad that we were so ignorant of the situation,we were just kids. But,the next time we got together we could get a group & go to the cemetery & leave flowers & pay the respect that we didn't get to years ago to our classmate. Apparanently he is buried in the area. Well,it's just an idea & I am going to go for sure. Steve, can you remember where he is buried?? Think about it everybody!! Carol
